On April 27, 1942, this Handley Page Halifax, serving with No. 102 Squadron, flew its first mission—an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz, anchored in a Norwegian fjord. After being hit by anti-aircraft fire, the crew was forced to make an emergency landing on a frozen lake. One crew member, suffering a broken ankle, was captured, while the rest, with the aid of the Norwegian resistance, escaped to neutral Sweden.
