Focal Epilepsy A focal seizure starts in just one part of the brain. These used to be known as partial seizures, and they’re actually the most common type of seizure people with epilepsy have. Most of the time, we just call them “focal seizures.” When the seizure starts on one side of the brain and the person stays fully awake, alert, and aware of what’s happening, it’s called a focal aware seizure.
